Dental Sleep Medicine Mini Residency

This is a five day and a half day program divided into two segments.  This course is designed for the dentist who is very serious about dental sleep medicine and would like to jump start their practice in this direction.  Of course the practice management concepts can be utilized throughout your entire practice, and the confidence you staff acquires in the first segment should pay dividends throughout the entire scope of your practice.

The mini residency is meant to guide your thinking from the first contact your patient makes with your office right through discharge and the maintenance phase of the appliance therapy.  This is designed to teach and experience every phase of treatment and patient contact while treating sleep disturbed breathing in the dental office.

It is recommended that each doctor consider bringing one assistant and one front office personnel to this meeting.

Doctor Program:

In addition to having five certified hours in a sleep lab, the first session is a hands on comprehensive experience that includes patient management in all phases of dental sleep medicine from the time the patient contacts your office through the records for appliance construction.  Practice management, including patient and referral management, will be reviewed in detail.  Hands on experiences with patients and an opportunity to evaluate yourself and the message you are delivering at each stage of the patient contact will be explored in detail.
  
This three day course will take the dentist through initial “marketing” concepts, the initial visit with the patient, concentrating on diagnosis, and patient management.  The Doctor will face many various “situations” and be guided through dealing with them.

Day One - Post insertion complications

This session is for doctors only.  Day ONE will be completely dedicated to appliance and patient management following the insertion.  Joint and muscle complications will be completely reviewed and their management taught in detail.  This will include titration concepts and the use of ambulatory guided titration.  We will review all anatomy and muscle treatment concept including the pharmacology of sleep and muscle, and the role of parafunction in sleep medicine.  Joint pathology and treatment including palliative therapy required during some titrations, will be explored in detail.
 
For those who want more lab time, it will be available (5 hours)

Day Two – “Cram School”

This day will be spent in a total review of dental sleep medicine from A to Z.  This fast paced day will be loaded with information.  This Cram School Day is a perfect review for all of dental sleep medicine and is while it is geared to help prepare for the upcoming Diplomat Exam for the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, it will prove to be an excellent experience for all.  Literature will be provided on line before the course and the literature will be reviewed during the course.  We will review all Sleep Medicine principles as well as the role or oral appliance therapy, PSG principles, the role of ambulatory studies, and critical pulmonary and sleep physiology.
